Why an Orchid Outlasts a Dozen Roses This Valentine’s Day

White and pink orchid flowers, a long-lasting alternative to Valentine's Day roses

A dozen red roses is the classic Valentine’s Day gift. It’s also one that’s usually wilting by the following weekend. If you want your Valentine’s Day flowers to say something that lasts, a flowering orchid is a beautiful alternative. It looks just as romantic on the day and keeps blooming for months afterwards.

Orchid vs roses: how they compare

  • How long they last: cut roses typically last around a week in a vase. A Phalaenopsis orchid typically flowers for up to three months.
  • Upkeep: roses need fresh water and stem trimming every couple of days. An orchid needs a drink about once a week.
  • After the flowers fade: roses go in the bin. An orchid rests, then can flower again next year, maybe even in time for next Valentine’s Day.
  • Presentation: roses need a vase. Our orchids arrive in a brass and gold metal pot, ready to display.
  • Pets: Phalaenopsis orchids are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Learn more in our guide: are orchids toxic to cats and dogs?

What an orchid says on Valentine’s Day

Orchids have been associated with love, beauty and luxury for centuries. Giving one says you put some thought into it, and because it keeps flowering, it’s a daily reminder of you long after 14 February has passed.

Choosing a colour

  • Pink: romance, affection and joy. Pink orchids are our top pick for Valentine’s Day.
  • Purple spotted: passionate and a little bit bold. Purple spotted orchids suit someone who loves something out of the ordinary.
  • White and purple: elegant with a romantic edge. White and purple orchids are lovely for a newer relationship or a long-time partner alike.
  • White: pure and timeless, perfect for someone with a minimalist style. Shop white orchids.

Go bigger with more stems

If you want the wow factor of a big bouquet, choose a multi-stem arrangement. A two or three-stem display makes a generous statement, and our custom orchid arrangement goes all the way up to six stems. Prices start from $119 for a single stem.

Plan ahead for 14 February 2027

Valentine’s Day 2027 falls on a Sunday, and our nursery is closed on Sundays. That means you’ll want to order ahead for delivery during the week, or pick up from the nursery on Saturday 13 February. Valentine’s week is busy, so ordering early gives you the best choice of plants.

Our nursery is at 350 Underwood Road, Eight Mile Plains, and is open Saturdays from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Make it last

Pop a care card in with your gift, or send your Valentine our Phalaenopsis orchid care guide. With bright, indirect light and a weekly drink, their orchid will keep flowering for months.
